Project - Parents for alternative Education

Who we are?

We are a group of parents from Qiryat Gat and the surrounding area who believe that the need for alternate forms of education is fundamental in today's civil society. Not every system is right for every child. Placement of a child in a system that is incompatible for them severely hinders their ability to flourish, may damage self-esteem and their overall sense of competence and natural spark they all came into the world with.

We strive to establish an educational environment (school) that is non-judgmental, does not attempt to adjust, correct or label the students. A system that allows and accepts one for "who they are as they are" so long as they honor and respect the freedom of their follow students.

We joined together and registered a non-profit association Dekel - Democratic Education Qiryat Gat & Surrounding area to present this existential need to the local and national authorities as we believe that its fulfillment is inevitable.

Unfortunately, Dekel School closed due to objections from the Ministry of Education. The website remains open for the benefits of those interested in alternative education.

Important to Know:
1. More than 25 democratic schools operate today throughout Israel.

2. The school will operate with support from the local authorities and be recognized by the Ministry of Education.

3. A kindergarten and multi-age school will operate side by side.

4. In democratic schools, laws are passed in the parliament and enforced by the discipline committee.

5. Learning in a democratic school is carried out in various ways and is adapted to each student.

6. The school will operate at a ratio of one teacher to 12 students at most.

7. The School will facilitate methods of mediation and problem solving through dialogue.

8. Democratic schools excel in non-violence.

9. The school will promote collaboration and cross-fertilization with existing education systems in the area.
